Introducing.......
the TeleSwitch
controller system
The newest TeleSwitch, introduced in May of
2006 is primarily an advancement on the original TeleSwitch. We
thought you might like to review the information on the original model
since it will help you better understand the capabilities and applications
for this incredible product.
Not too long ago, we were contacted by an
electrical contractor who wanted some kind of wireless device to remotely
turn on a device. We had a radio transceiver developed for the OEM
market. We were already using these transceivers is some of our
custom products developed for courtroom security and law enforcement.
We also had a DTMF controller that was developed primarily for wireless
gate activation. It was pretty much a matter of hooking these two
items together, programming them to do what we wanted to do and connecting
them to each other. Lastly, we needed a personal 2-way radio capable
of sending DTMF control tones and the TeleSwitch solution was available
and for sale for those who needed this technology.
As it turns out, there are a LOT of
applications for the TeleSwitch system. The manager of a private
golf club told us we would like a low cost alternative to the wireless
pump control systems used by larger golf courses. We have long
supplied the radios used with such systems but we had never thought of
addressing the total solution. As it turns out, this user only
needed the ability to remotely control three pumps. We were already
using wireless voice alarm annunciation products for monitoring lift
station pumps, water tank overflow valves and a variety of similar
applications. With the TeleSwitch, we could offer our customers the
ability to control these remote pumps and valves without going to the
site. In many cases, the time saved could result in significant
costs savings by reducing costly overflows and/or damaged pump motors.
In the case of the golf club, simplifying irrigation procedures gave
him more time to do other important things - like taking care of his
members!
The TeleSwitch system is simple,
affordable, and effective. Here's how it works.......
General:
The
Ritron TeleSwitch Controller essentially consists of six components –
the DTX Series FM transceiver module, shown at the left, the
GGT-1/1F DTMF decoder, shown later, and a serial data connector cable as
shown above.The system
operates from a 12 volt power source rated at 3 amps.A power supply is provided that connects to the exposed red and
black wires on the data connector cable. If preferred, an external 12 VDC power source may be used as long
as it is rated at 1 amp or more. The
GGT-1/1F DTMF decoder is supplied without a housing. It can be attached to the DTX series transceiver module using
supplied double stick tape or enclosed in the housing of your choice (not
supplied).An external
antenna with magnetic mount and a PC programming kit for the DTX FM
transceiver is also included.
Theory of
Operation:
The
TeleSwitch Controller is normally used in association with a personal
2-way radio transceiver capable of transmitting a DTMF code 123 on the
frequency of 151.880 utilizing 12.5 kHz channel spacing. The personal 2-way radio normally used is the Ritron SLX series,
shown at the left, pre-programmed on the aforementioned frequency on the
first channel selection (CH-1).The
code is sent by momentarily pressing and releasing the P1 button on the
front of the radio.Pressing this button will automatically transmit the DTMF 123
code.Note:Some models may use a 125 code.If applicable, you can use the P2 button to send a 125 code.
The
code is received by the DTX FM transceiver module and decoded by the
GGT-1/1F DTMF decoder that activates a set of relay contacts (See diagram
on the following page).These
contacts are connected to an external device with a pair of wires (not
supplied) between the normally open (N/O) relay contacts on the GGT-1/1F
DTMF decoder.Each time the
button is depressed, the transmitted signal will switch the relay contacts
from normally open to normally closed. The GGT-1/1F is generally set for momentary contact and then return
to a normally open condition.If
latching capability is required, please give us a call at 1.800.489.2611.
Once
the DTX FM transceiver module has been connected to the GGT-1/1F board,
your next step would be to connect the antenna with magnet mount base
(supplied), then connect the wires
to the GGT-1/1F from the associated device relay, and lastly connect 12
volt power using either the AC adapter provided or your own 12 volt DC
power source.
Operating Procedure
With
the aforementioned connections, you would be ready for a test of the
system. To perform a test or activation, you simply turn on the SLX
radio (radio should be charged overnight before using).Make sure the radio is on Channel 1 (CH 1).Press and release the P1 button to send the DTMF control
code.The relay should
activate as desired to control your external device.
In
the event you choose to use a different frequency other than 158.880 MHz,
we have preprogrammed the frequencies of 151.820, 151.940, 154.570, and
154.600 have been programmed on channels 2 – 5 with a privacy tone of
186.2 Hz with 12.5 channel spacing.Using
one of these secondary frequencies will require reprogramming of the
GGT-1/1F decoder using supplied programming kit. If desired, the
TeleSwitch controller system can be programmed on any VHF or UHF frequency
of your choice.
