The ultimate Radio-to-Radio extended communications via the Internet is the CSI FLEX III wide area system. Unlike our other RoIP systems, the CSI system can talk from the main operating center to multiple satellite stations. For example, a large hospital in a metropolitan area may be connected by management, ownership, or both of smaller hospitals in outlying areas. We know there are advantages in centralizing functions such as maintenance and security dispatching. From prior examples, we have described the benefits and operating routines of simple two site systems. The CSI system can provide extended communications to dozens of satellite locations using either conventional or trunking technology. A statewide, or even worldwide network of hospitals and EMS services is possible with total Interoperability through the use of a device known as a FLEX III controller. The diagram may explain this application a little better. You will note that we have added a device called an IP Server at the primary location. The information flow on this system travels from the primary location radio upon activation by a personal 2-way radio as shown on the left. The information then flows through the IP Server for connection to a device known as a Gateway. The Gateway serves a similar function to the Easy-Link device used in less sophisticated systems. Selection of the desired Gateway is determined by channel selection initiated by the user of the sending radio. The function of switching a channel selector causes the IP Server to designate the communications flow to the desired satellite location. In this case, we will call this Main Facility. When the calling user keys their transmitter, the call is then connected to the Ethernet, passed through the Internet to the designated recipient (in this case, it is the Satellite Location) via the Gateway. The call then passes through the associated radio at the Main Facility and on to the desired user group. Normally, systems of this type are set up for one group of people to address another. When it is desirable to communicate with an individual user, either the 2-tone or ZVEI signaling incorporated in the Ritron SLX radio can be used for this purpose. Additional information on the SLX is available at www.usa-radio1.com/slx. A simple 2-way radio such as the Ritron JMX-141 could also be used if you do not require individual calling at significant cost savings. Additional information on the JMX-141 is available at www.usa-radio1.com/jobcom. At this point, the CSI system is performing essentially the same function as the previously discussed Easy-Link system. The major difference is that we have added a Network Server with an additional cost of $2,495 and we are using two Gateways, each of which costs over twice as much as Easy-Link units plus the FLEX III controller. So, why would we do this? The reason is enhanced capabilities. You will recall that the Easy-Link system is great if there is only one remote site. The CSI system can serve up to 60 remote sites by simply adding Gateway modems as desired. Our sample system shown in the diagram above is already configured to add additional sites as desired. Of equal importance is the fact that the CSI system can be initially configured for LTR trunking, or this capability can be added later since the FLEX III controller is capable of recognizing CTCSS or DCS tones (common to conventional 2-way radio systems) or the LTR format simultaneously. The cost of the system defined in the diagram above would be calculated as follows:
