From a practical viewpoint, we believe the application of using the Internet for radio-to-radio communications has the most potential user value. There are two basic applications. The first would be that of Interoperable communications for differing types of radios (i.e. VHF to UHF). There are less expensive solutions if both radios are in the same operating area such as a cross band repeater. Click here for alternate VHF to UHF solutions. If the radios are not within the same operating area, the Internet solution may be the best choice. The second application would be for radio-to-radio extended communications from one operating area to another. The diagram may explain this application a little better.
As indicated in the diagram above, we will assume the person at the left is in charge of security (it could also be a security dispatcher) needs to talk directly to another radio user many miles away. With an Easy-Link network, the task is as simple as pressing a button! The originating call is received by a Ritron RadioNexus radio, routed to the Easy-Link analog to digital converter, then connected to the PC Ethernet where the call is forwarded to the secondary IP address via transmission over the Internet as digital data. At the receiving end, the call is received through the secondary Easy-Link A to D converter which reads the IP address of the sending unit and connects to the associated radio after converting the digital data to analog for transmission over the secondary radio to the person on the right. Operationally, these two units talk to each other just as if they were communicating as ordinary 2-way radios. To accomplish this objective, the Easy-Link units at both ends must be connected to the Internet with a high speed broadband connection. They can be either directly connected or a part of an Ethernet user group. The total system configuration consists of the user radios at both ends (we favor the Ritron SLX ). Additional information on the SLX is available at www.usa-radio1.com/slx. We also offer the Ritron Jobcom series radios with prices starting under $200 that are fully compatible with the Easy-Link system. Additional information is available at www.usa-radio1.com/jobcom. The Easy-Link units are $795 each. If a radio is already in place, cables are available for connection to most popular radios for $35. If you are starting with a brand new system, you may want to consider the purchase of a Ritron RadioNexus radio for $495. The total cost of this system, excluding user radios and Internet service would be just $2,650 complete! If you have a simple requirement requiring coordination between a single primary and secondary site, the basic Easy-Link system is all you need. If you need to coordinate between multiple sites, we replace the Easy-Link with an IP Server and as many Gateways as may be needed to support multiple secondary sites. The diagram below shows how this works for a two site system.
In larger buildings, it may be desirable to add a Repeater. The Ritron Liberty Repeater is ideally suited for extending the range between handheld radios within a building. A Repeater can operate as a part of the Easy-Link system with the understanding that a separate channel may be desirable for connected calls between the primary and secondary sites. Although it is possible to use one of the regular channels at the primary or secondary location, it should be noted that this would cause all calls made on either system to be heard on BOTH systems. That may or may not be a problem. In general, we recommend obtaining a new channel for calls connected between the two sites. This special channel can be programmed into existing or new radios and scanned to assure that no calls for the alternate site are missed.
