What's the big deal.......

about connecting 2-way radios and the Internet?  Well - there are some benefits.  We'll talk about that shortly, and there are some technical issues that must be addressed.   It all starts with the fact the Internet, and those things that connect to it, are designed for digital operation.  2-way radios, at least most of them, are designed for analog operation.  So, our basic task, if we want to use 2-way radio over the Internet is to come up with a way to make analog things talk to digital things.

We are not going to get technical except to say that there are devices that can provide the analog to digital conversion (and vice versa).  Not surprisingly, they are called A to D Converters or more recently Digital Signal Processors or DSP's.  Those of us in the wireless communications industry know that this technology has been around for quite some time.  The most common application is in the use of Interoperable Bridges such as those offered by JPS/Raytheon and VDV Media.  The primary function of Interoperable Bridges is to allow different types of radios to talk to each other in an emergency (i.e. VHF to UHF or 800 MHz trunking to a Cell phone, etc.).  Most of these devices have the ability to connect to the Internet, but they are generally lacking other elements necessary to communicate over the Internet.  Personally, we have never seen one of these Bridges provide a radio call over the Internet.  The ability to provide 2-way radio communications over the Internet seems to fall into a more specialized category, and within that category, there are additional areas of specialization.

Technical considerations aside, the real question is what do you want to do?  Why do you want to do it and what are you willing to pay to satisfy this requirement?  We will attempt to answer that question by providing a few examples that appear to be a practical application of this technology.  Keep in mind that technology has to be cost effective.  It is the engineer's job to develop technology.  It is up to you (with a little help from us) to decide whether the application of that technology is affordable and efficient.

We have defined several different applications of RoIP for your consideration.  Products by the major suppliers such as Connect Systems Inc., IDA Corporation, Ritron, and Telex have been reviewed and we have selected the American made products that we feel are best suited for those we serve.   Our solutions are based on Radio-to-Radio communications.  We have reviewed the available solutions for PC to Radio applications and concluded that this is not a practical technology at this time.  Conversely, the Radio-to-Radio solutions are both practical and affordable.  Just click on the links below for more information on your area of interest.
