An overview of court security.......

products from Falcon Direct is presented below. We understand there are many questions that may not be answered in this brief presentation. That is why we have more detailed information available by clicking on the links on the left side of this page.

As you may recall, the Alabama Administrative Office of Courts (AOC) provided 100% direct funding for improved courtroom security during the 2004/2005fiscal year. You can still receive 100% funding for improved safety and security for the 2005/2006 fiscal year which began October 1st.

The main difference for 2007 is that the purchase is no longer required to be made to a contract vendor. Now you can choose the technology and vendor that addresses your particular needs. I met with Chuck Haveard and Alicia Cannon of AOC for the purpose of qualifying three of our products for funding. These qualified products will be discussed shortly. Direct payment by AOC to the vendor will no longer be applicable. Under the current guidelines, the County makes the purchase on your behalf. The vendor invoices the County, and AOC reimburses the County. This is a BIG change. Additional information is available by clicking here.

For the current fiscal period, Falcon Direct is offering several configurations of the original Companion system as well as a new personal communications device and an emergency personal location device. Although these devices have been approved for use by AOC, there are some conditions applicable to the purchase. Mainly, if the purchase is over $7,500, the Alabama bid law requirements will apply. We have prepared bid specifications on each of our products in WORD format. This documents can be downloaded, printed, and modified as desired by clicking here. If your proposed procurement is less than $7,500, it will be necessary only to place your County order with Falcon Direct. After the equipment has been received and an invoice received from Falcon Direct, submit your County invoice to AOC using the item description and pricing information contained on the Falcon Direct invoice.

We know if doesn't need to be said, but we will say it again. AOC will reimburse your County only for equipment used by circuit clerks and judges, courtrooms, district clerks and judges, and juvenile probation officers. Adult probation officers, county clerks, district attorneys, probate judges, and municipalities are not eligible for AOC funding. However, we have programs for these other users that will be addressed separately.

Companion LD Plus

The Companion LD Plus is our most popular and cost efficient wireless calling system. Typically, three of these are used in the typical courthouse. The Companion LD Plus is one of several different models available for USA Radio. Information on the other models is available by clicking here. Similar in size and appearance to the Companion LD, the Plus model can accommodate up to four different button codes as opposed to two button codes on the LD model or one code on the standard Companion models. This means that up to four offices within range of the central processing unit (CPU) can be served by a single unit. For example, if the District Clerk, District Judge, Juvenile Probation Officer, and Courtroom One are all on the same floor and within 60 feet of the CPU, all can be served with the single CPU. The main difference in appearance in the LD Plus and the Plus is that the LD Plus has two call button receive antennas rather than one (See photo above). Note: Multiple buttons can be set up on a common code. For example, if you want to equip three people in the clerks office, you can order as many buttons as you wish on a common code. Four buttons are provided with the Companion LD Plus. Additional buttons are $50 each. Model COMLDP15V (VHF) and COMLDP45U (UHF).

Judicial personal protection products

are available as a supplement to the Companion products offered by Falcon Direct. The primary purpose of these products is to provide an enhanced level of safety for judges and juvenile probation officers when they are outside their courtrooms or offices.

Emergency Communications

The SLX Personal Communicator replaces the earlier DTR model that was supplied during the 2004/2005 fiscal year for Alabama Administrative Office of Courts (AOC) funding. The early version used a proprietary frequency and transmission system that was ideal for communicating within the Courthouse. Regrettably, the DTR model was not suitable for use beyond a quarter mile of the Courthouse and it was incompatible with VHF and UHF radio communications systems traditionally used by law enforcement. The new SLX Personal Communicator has longer range and full compatibility with law enforcement VHF or UHF radio communications systems.

Unlike ordinary 2-way radios, the SLX has a unique listen in feature that allows another SLX radio to remotely activate the selected SLX transmitter. Alternately, the SLX has an emergency call button that will automatically key and hold the transmitter on for three 15 second intervals. This allows another SLX user to listen in when the primary user cannot use the radio in a conventional manner. Every SLX radio can be programmed to transmit a unique identification code as well as transmitting a menu of canned text messages. Not only is the SLX well suited for emergency use, it can also operate on a separate administration channel for routine inter-office use, kind of like a wireless intercom!

About the SLX Personal Communicator

The SLX Personal Communicator is a compact (about the size of a fat pack of cigarettes) that weights a mere ten ounces. It is a military grade, high performance 2-way radio that is compatible with the radio communications systems (VHF or UHF) used by the majority of law enforcement agencies throughout Alabama and the nation.

With the permission of a participating law enforcement agency (Sheriff, or municipal police department as applicable), the SLX provides the user (Judge or Juvenile Probation Officer) with the ability to communicate directly with the agency in times of emergency. The price is just $439.
