In early 2005.......

Falcon Direct of Birmingham, Alabama was asked to provide a cost effective wireless personal alerting system for the Conecuh County Alabama court system. In the process of building a new court house, the courtrooms were temporarily located in an old warehouse and the court offices were moved to another building some distance away. There was a concern for the safety of the clerks, judges, and juvenile probation officers during this interim period while the new courthouse was under construction

At that time, the Alabama Administrative Office of Courts (AOC) had a purchasing contract with a provider or wired alerting systems. The problem was that wired systems were associated with high construction cost and a lack of mobility. If the judge or clerk was not seated where the button was located, there was no way to summon help. Additionally, there were some delays associated with the way the button activations were handled. Typically, the calls were routed to an alarm panel type device located at 9-1-1 or to an alternate location that was often unmanned.

As a result, Falcon Direct was approved by AOC for 100% funding, first for Conecuh County, and then for any county judicial system operating under AOC funding (i.e. clerk's offices, courtrooms, judges (both circuit and district), and juvenile probation offices). The new system offered by Falcon Direct offered the advantages of wireless alerting with direct notification to the supporting law enforcement agency. In some cases the Sheriff was deemed best suited for immediate response (as is the case in Lamar County). In others, the local municipal police department (as is the case in Conecuh County) was designated at the first responder for an emergency call.

The new system, known as The Companion, is available in several different configurations. Later, additions to the system were approved which included a personal 2-way communicator and a GPS locator to enhance the safety for judges when they were outside the courtroom or judicial offices.

These new products are now available, still with AOC approval, but with reimbursement to the applicable county rather than direct payment to the vendor. Probate courts, county and municipal offices can also benefit from The Companion system. Although not eligible for AOC reimbursement, the cost is insignificant in relation to the value of safety for county and municipal employees. The City of Evergreen expanded services to the educational and merchant community through the development of the Quick Alert II program.
